More than half a century ago, Herman Miller's founder, D.J. DePree, set our company on a path toward environmental stewardship that has taken on new meaning and importance in the decades since.

Today we are recognized as an industry leader in environmentally responsible product design and manufacturing. Our day-to-day operations, strongly influenced by the actions of Herman Miller's Environmental Quality Action Team (EQAT), reflect our triple bottom line of financial, environmental, and social equity. Our efforts to advocate for and protect the environment--notably our Design for Environment (DfE) protocol--have resulted in products and programs that link us with customers who also share our passion for treating the natural environment with respect.

Herman Miller does not advocate for the environment to win awards. As we have stated many times before, we do this for the simple reason that we believe protecting our fragile environment is the right thing to do. We intend to be a good corporate citizen within both our industry and our communities. We also owe it to our employee-owners to conduct our business in ways that protect their health and safety.

In recent years we have spoken frequently of Herman Miller's journey toward becoming a sustainable enterprise. You may be interested to know that we have designated the year 2020 as our deadline to achieve a range of sustainability targets, including zero landfill and zero hazardous waste generation. This initiative, which we have named "Perfect Vision," charts a challenging course. With continuing improvements in technology and a strong commitment among Herman Miller employees, we fully intend to reach these goals.
