Herman Miller Japan, Ltd.(Tokyo Design Center, 5th Floor 5-25-19 Higashi-Gotanda, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo 141-0022, President: Nigel Mortimer), will launch the direct sale of Eames Shell Chairs. The Shell Chairs, part of the Herman Miller for the Home offering, will be sold directly at authorized dealers of Herman Miller Japan, Ltd. from September 2005. This has been sold by InterOffice until now. Prior to the launch, a collaboration event between Charles & Ray Eames and Saeko Takagi will be held at the Herman Miller For the Home Showroom. There will also be two Cafe Live performances during the exhibition.

The Herman Miller Eames Shell Chair was originally designed for the International Design Competition, part of a ground breaking low cost furniture series, hosted by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Until 1993, Herman Miller Inc. manufactured the chair in FRP (fiber-reinforced glass). At that time, in response to environmental concerns, it was discontinued because of the unrecycable nature of the material. The Eames Shell Chair was then re introduced in polypropylene, faithful to original specifications, and has two lines: side chairs and armchairs.

Inspired by the designs of Eames, Saeko Takagi, an emerging contemporary artist in Japan, creates works in fusion of those designs and her own art.
